Guide to Ceremony Music

The Prelude

The prelude music is the music played 20 to 30 minutes prior to the beginning of your ceremony. This music establishes the mood of your wedding. You can utilizes a vocalist, an organist, a string ensemble or even taped music. Classical, elegant music from Vivaldi, Mozart and Handel is often used for prelude music, but you can play anything from Beethoven to the Beach Boys. Your guests will be seated during the prelude music.

The Processional

This is the music that begins with the entrance of the wedding party. The ushers lead the processional, followed by the bridesmaids and maid of honor. Then comes the ring bearer and flower girl (if you have them). This music starts out softly and increases in volume until the time for the bride’s entrance. Canon in D Major (Pachelbel) is commonly used during the processional.

The Bride’s Entrance

This is probably the most important part of the ceremony music. All the guests rise when the bride begins her walk down the aisle and all the attention is focused on her! Many brides choose Bridal Chorus (Wagner), known as “Here Comes the Bride.” However, you can choose any song that you wish. Trumpet Voluntary (Clarke) is also very popular.

Music During the Ceremony

If you’d like, you can have a few selections of music played during your ceremony. This music can be be played during the unity candle lighting, or at any other time. You can also have a short interlude by a vocalist right before a reading or prayer. Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) is a top choice for ceremony music.

The Recessional

After the bride and groom kiss, the officiant will announce the couple as they turn toward to walk back down the aisle arm in arm. This is when the recessional music begins. The recessional order is the bride and groom, flower girl and ring bearer, the maid of honor and best man, and finally the bridesmaids and ushers in pairs. Ode to Joy (Beethoven) and Wedding March (Mendelssohn) are often used for the recessional music.

The Postlude

Immediately after the recessional music ends, the postlude begins. This music consists of a few more upbeat songs as your guests exit the ceremony site. As with the other parts of the ceremony music, you can choose any type of music you wish for the postlude. Overture (from Music for the Royal Fireworks – Handel) and Trumpet Tune and Air (Purcell) are common.

The Expedition Of Bollywood Music

When someone thinks about Bollywood, the first thing that instantaneously springs up into ones mind is Bollywood music. Bollywood without its music is like a flower without its fragrance. The core essence of Indian Cinema has always been its music and will continue to be so in years to come. Be it two lovers dancing around a tree or a soldier on duty remembering his wife and mother or a bunch of friends going to Goa on a road-trip, Bollywood has songs for almost all kinds of on-screen situations and relationships. Moreover, amazingly talented lyricists like Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi and many more with their innate ability to write, have made articulating feelings and emotions so much simpler. And of-course our immensely endowed music-directors also never leave any stones unturned in providing myriad magna opera in terms of extra-ordinarily brilliant music to the Indian Film Industry.

The Indian audience has got so much habituated to the presence of dozens of songs and dance numbers in almost all the Hindi films, that one can say that in case of Indian Cinema, music plays a more vital role than the star cast and the story line. The typical Bollywood music also known as filmy music on todays date has become internationally popular and you will find in-numerous videos on YouTube uploaded by people from all across the globe singing Hindi songs like Tu Jaane Na etc by themselves. That is the amount of popularity that today, Indian Cinema and Bollywood music have acquired worldwide. The history of Bollywood music has been very intriguing. It started in the late 50s when the concept of playback singing did not exist and hence, the actors had to croon their own songs while shooting it, followed by the evergreen era of dance numbers and cabaret that began in the early 70s. By the beginning of 90s Bollywood music had started getting highly influenced by the western harmonies, however, still somehow it managed to keep its original essence intact and thus, Bollywood music had made a huge impact on the public by then and had become the most integral and soulful part o.f the Indian Cinema.

But today, the definition of Bollywood music has changed upside down. Gone are the days of songs with a hint of nasal tone or the famous yodeling. Bollywood stands for much more today. The vivid variety of lyrics and compositions that the Indian film industry dishes out today is enough to give a tough competition to any international level musician. Young music directors like the duos of Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Suleman etc. are ruling over peoples heart by making such wondrously mushy or tub-thumping peppy tracks. The range of instruments, the quality of studio and mike etc. that is available today is something that if ace musicians like S.D Burman or R.D Burman had then they could have created magic with their music. However, musicians like A.R Rehman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy are no less as they creating appalling music and masterpieces like Jai Ho and Maa respectively. The level of acceptance by the Indian audience has also matured tremendously and offbeat songs like the ones of Dev.D also succeed in getting a position in the chartbusters. Thus, Bollywood music or the Filmy music as they put it has come a very long way from the 50s till today but it still oozes out with freshness and never fails to appeal the listeners with its zest and zeal.

Backing Tracks For Musicians

If you have played in a band or with other musicians you will know that there is no better buzz than when you play a song as a group and it just comes together and sounds just as good as the original.

However, most singers and musicians will tell you that this comes at a price, as to be able to experience this musical high, you have to find musicians to make up your band, which is far easier said than done, when you take into account that ideally you have to live reasonably close to each other, like the same music, be at a similar skill level, and of course be able to get on together.

Sounds easy enough, but if you live in a remote area, where there is not an abundance of musicians, this can become a mammoth task which will often lead to frustration and disappointment.

If you can’t find musicians in your area and still want the sound and feel of playing with other musicians you could consider using a backing track as there are many to be found on the internet nowadays.
There are literally thousands of jam tracks as they are known that are basically chord progressions of music repeated over and over so that you can practice improvising your guitar solo’s too.

Whilst these are great practice aids to help with your improvisation skills, when learning a new song it can be very beneficial to practice playing along to a backing track of that song before you meet up with the band for live rehearsals, or to just play along to if you are not in a band.

A great form of backing track to play along to is one which includes vocals, as many available online do not give this option and you find yourself having to sing along in your head so that you don’t loose your place in the song, not so good if you can’t sing and want to truly focus on your playing.

Try using a backing track that contains vocals and see how much easier it is to just concentrate on your playing, which will help you to develop your technique and sense of timing, and is much more fun.

Also there are now recordings in a multitrack format which are basically the studio masters of a song and are much like a backing track, but much more versatile as they include every instrument and vocal of the song and can be played in any music editing software, which also then gives you complete control over every element of the song.

For example, if you wanted to learn a particular guitar part, you could simply mute all of the other instruments in the song to isolate the guitar part that you want to learn and then use your music editors functions to slow the guitar track down, or loop a section of it so that it repeats over and over so that you can hear exactly what notes are being played by the guitar.

This particular type of backing track has become very popular with music teachers as the multitracks are so versatile and are ideal for helping to teach guitar, bass, or drums, as you can isolate any instrument and any part of a song enabling you to get a better understanding of how it is played.

If you enjoy playing guitar, bass, or drums, it is certainly worth checking out backing tracks, or a multitrack that gives you the option to have vocals included in the song as it makes the whole experience of playing much more enjoyable.
